GoHighLevel VA Trial Task: How to Test a VA from the Philippines Before You Hire Them

Anyone can list GoHighLevel on a profile. A short paid trial task shows who has actually built workflows, handled messy data and documented their work. This guide gives you the task, the scoring table and the screening questions I would use.

QUICK ANSWER

How do you test a GoHighLevel virtual assistant before hiring?

Give a shortlisted GoHighLevel VA one paid task of about 90 minutes in a trial sub-account: build a lead-capture workflow with a conditional branch, tags, a pipeline move and a test SMS. Score it on accuracy, testing, documentation and speed, then ask for a short Loom walkthrough.

What is a GoHighLevel VA trial task?

A GoHighLevel VA trial task is a small, paid piece of real work done in a test account before you offer a long-term role. It replaces guesswork. A profile that says GoHighLevel, GHL or Go High Level tells you what someone claims. A finished workflow tells you what they can do.

Employers on OnlineJobs.ph already screen this way. In postings I checked, one asked for a portfolio or Loom video of GoHighLevel work and availability for a paid test task, another offered a one-week paid trial, and a third asked candidates to describe one recent task step by step. A trial task makes that screen consistent.

How do you set up a safe test account?

Never hand a candidate your live account. Build a sandbox first.

  1. Open a free trial. HighLevel offers a 14-day trial on any plan. Its pricing page says billing starts automatically when the trial ends unless you cancel, and usage-based fees for phone, email and AI can apply during the trial. Set a calendar reminder to cancel.
  2. Or use a spare sub-account. The $97 Starter plan includes 3 sub-accounts and the $297 Unlimited plan includes unlimited sub-accounts, so an existing account can hold a dedicated test sub-account (HighLevel pricing page).
  3. Give access to the test account only, with test contacts you created yourself. Never use real customer data.
  4. Agree the pay and the time. Pay for the hours, set a 90-minute target and set a deadline.
  5. Ask for a screen recording. A short Loom walkthrough shows how the VA thinks, not only what they built.

What should the 90-minute GoHighLevel task be?

Pick one job that touches what a GoHighLevel VA does every day: forms, workflows, pipelines and testing. This one should fit in about 90 minutes for someone who has built it before. The time is my recommendation, not a benchmark from any source.

  1. Create a lead form or survey with name, email, phone, service needed and budget fields.
  2. Build a workflow triggered by the form submission that tags the contact by source.
  3. Add an if/else branch on the budget field: higher budgets go to a booked-call path, lower budgets get a nurture email.
  4. Create an opportunity in a pipeline and move it to the right stage based on the branch.
  5. Add a wait step and a follow-up email if the contact has not replied. Build the SMS step but leave it unsent unless your test number is registered for A2P 10DLC.
  6. Submit the form three times, including twice with the same email, and report what happened.
  7. Record a short Loom walkthrough and write a five-line handoff note.

The duplicate test is the step that separates careful builders from fast ones. My own CRM data work at Sales Fury ended with 95% fewer data-entry errors and about 40% better data reliability, and the habit behind it was checking data at the point of entry. A good VA tests the ugly case before you do.

How do you score the trial task?

Use one table for every candidate so the comparison is fair. Score each row from 1 to 5 and write one line of evidence. These criteria are my own recommendation.

CriterionStrong resultRed flag
AccuracyEvery step works as briefed and the branch sends contacts the right waySteps built but never run
TestingTest leads submitted, including a duplicate, with results reportedSays done with no evidence
Naming and orderWorkflow, tag and pipeline names a stranger could followDefault names like New Workflow 3
DocumentationShort Loom plus a handoff note listing triggers, tags and fieldsNo explanation of why it was built this way
CommunicationAsks one or two sharp questions up front and flags risks earlySilent for hours or asks nothing
TimeFinishes in the agreed window or says early what will slow itOverruns with no update

Treat anything below 3 on accuracy, testing or documentation as a no for a role that touches live leads.

Does the VA understand A2P 10DLC?

Add A2P 10DLC to the interview even if the trial never sends a live text. Carriers require registration for business texts sent from US 10-digit numbers, and a February 2026 OnlineJobs.ph role lists A2P and 10DLC verification among its top duties.

HighLevel’s own registration guide says you register the campaign after the brand is approved, that HighLevel submits the campaign for review automatically once the brand passes, and that registration and carrier fees pass through with no HighLevel markup. For a benchmark on amounts, Twilio lists a one-time brand fee of $4 for low-volume standard and sole proprietor registration and $44 for standard, plus a one-time $15 campaign vetting fee. Fees can differ by provider, so confirm HighLevel’s current numbers before you budget.

Ask the candidate:

  • What is the difference between a brand registration and a campaign registration?
  • Why do campaigns get rejected, and what would you check first?
  • What opt-out and help wording belongs in sample messages?
  • Who supplies the legal business details? (The answer should be you. They must match your registered business, so a VA should ask for them, not guess.)

Where do Zapier, Make and webhooks fit in?

Many GoHighLevel postings pair it with Zapier, including the February 2026 role above. Native workflows cover a lot, but some jobs need an outside tool, such as sending a new lead to a spreadsheet, a Slack channel or another CRM. Add an optional bonus step to the trial: send the new lead to a Google Sheet through a Zapier or Make scenario, or through a webhook.

Ask the VA to show the JSON payload and explain the API payload mapping, meaning which GoHighLevel field feeds which column. A VA who can also explain a lookup table for routing budget values and multi-step conditional routing is thinking past the basics. For background, read what a webhook is, with a Shopify example and Zapier vs Make. What should you ask before the trial?

  1. Which GoHighLevel workflows have you built, and what did each one do? Ask for one example step by step.
  2. Can you share a Loom video or portfolio of your GoHighLevel work with client details removed?
  3. How do you handle a duplicate contact inside a workflow?
  4. What do you check before you turn a workflow on?
  5. Which hours can you work? One OnlineJobs.ph posting I checked required US Eastern business hours, which is overnight in the Philippines.
  6. What is your backup if your internet or power drops?
  7. Have you registered A2P 10DLC brands and campaigns before?
  8. What would you do if a client asked for a change that could break their automation?

Pair these with a general checklist: how to hire a virtual assistant in the Philippines.

What does the trial cost, and what does a GoHighLevel VA cost?

A 90-minute trial is one and a half hours of pay. At $8 an hour that is $12, at $5 it is $7.50 and at $15 it is $22.50. Published rates differ by source, so I list each one. HireTalent.ph shows a GoHighLevel average of $8.25 an hour with a range of $5 to $15. VA Masters quotes $8.50 to $16 an hour for vetted placements. The OnlineJobs.ph postings I checked offered roughly $3 to $8 an hour, some in AUD or CAD. Agency pages show what clients pay and job posts show what direct hires are offered, so treat them as two markets.

For a full cost breakdown, including 13th month pay and payment fees, see what a virtual assistant costs in the Philippines. A trial costs little next to a bad hire who breaks a live workflow.

Where do you find candidates to test?

Shortlist three, then run the same task with each. Compare platforms in Upwork vs OnlineJobs vs JobStreet vs Indeed, or follow the steps in how to find and hire a VA on Upwork. My virtual assistant services and CRM and data admin VA pages explain the roles I cover.

Frequently asked questions

What is a GoHighLevel VA?

A GoHighLevel VA, often called a GHL VA, is a remote assistant who works inside the platform: building forms, workflows and pipelines, managing contacts and calendars, and keeping automations running. The platform now markets itself as HighLevel. Roles range from basic admin to technical work such as sub-account setup and A2P 10DLC verification.

Should you pay for a GoHighLevel VA trial task?

Yes. A paid task is fair, attracts serious candidates, and matches what employers already do. One OnlineJobs.ph posting I checked expects candidates to accept a paid test, and another offers a one-week paid trial. Keep the task short, agree the pay before you start, and use a test account.

How long should a GoHighLevel trial task take?

About 90 minutes for a task with a form, a workflow with a branch, a pipeline step and a test run. That figure is my recommendation, not an industry standard. If a candidate needs far longer, note it, but allow extra time for a first look at your naming rules.

Can a candidate use my live GoHighLevel account for the trial?

Not before you trust them. Use a free trial or a spare sub-account with test contacts, because one misplaced trigger could message real customers. Move to live access only after a passed trial, written rules for what they may change, and a clear handoff process.

Do Philippines-based GoHighLevel VAs have to work overnight?

Not always, but US-hours roles often mean night shifts in the Philippines. One OnlineJobs.ph posting I checked wanted US Eastern business hours and described them as overnight there. Others list Philippine Time. Agree on hours, overlap windows and a backup internet plan before the trial begins.

Can a VA register A2P 10DLC for me?

A VA can enter the details and submit the registration, but the business information must come from you and match your legal registration. Carriers and The Campaign Registry review it. Do not let anyone invent business details, since mismatches can cause rejection.
